Your Core Powers Every Shot (Even the Soft Ones)

When most players think about dinking, they think about hands and wrists. But every stable dink starts in your core. A strong core lets you:

  • Maintain a low, stable stance at the kitchen line
  • Absorb pace without getting pushed back
  • Generate controlled power from rotation, not arm swing
  • Play longer without lower back fatigue

The Pickleball Core vs. Gym Core

Pickleball core strength is different from six-pack abs. You need:

  • Anti-rotation stability — resisting twisting forces during shots
  • Hip-to-shoulder connection — transferring power from legs through torso
  • Endurance — holding position through long dink rallies
  • Quick recovery — snapping back to ready position between shots

5 Core Exercises for Pickleball Players

1. Plank (30-60 seconds) The foundation. Keep your body straight, engage your glutes, breathe steadily. If you can hold 60 seconds easily, try single-arm or single-leg variations.

2. Bird Dog (10 each side) On all fours, extend opposite arm and leg. Hold for 3 seconds. This builds the anti-rotation stability you need for dinking.

3. Pallof Press (10 each side) Use a resistance band anchored at chest height. Press the band straight out in front of you and hold. This directly mimics resisting rotational forces during play.

4. Dead Bug (10 each side) Lie on your back, arms up, knees at 90 degrees. Lower opposite arm and leg while keeping your lower back pressed to the floor. Core endurance builder.

5. Side Plank (20-30 seconds each side) Targets obliques — the muscles that power your rotational shots. Keep your body in a straight line from head to feet.

The 10-Minute Core Routine

Do all 5 exercises as a circuit, 2 rounds, 3 times per week. You'll notice better stability at the kitchen line within 2 weeks.
